How Do I Become A Christian?
You have asked the most important question of your life since your eternal destiny depends on the answer.
The key question of the New Testament is “What do you think about the Christ?” (Matthew 22:42 NET Bible)
This is the question that Jesus pointedly asked Martha at her brother’s graveside. “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies, and the one who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26 NET)
What Becoming A Christian Is Not
You don’t become a Christian by joining a church, or doing good deeds, keeping the Golden Rule, being baptized, or being born to a family that is Christian.
What Becoming A Christian Is
A Christian is anyone who puts their trust in Jesus as Savior and has a personal relationship with him by faith.
Now this is eternal life – that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent. (John 17:3 NET)
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. The one who has the Son has this eternal life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have this eternal life. 1 John 5:11-12 (NET)
Steps To Becoming A Christian
Becoming a Christian requires a person to understand who they are as a person, the penalty that is hanging over them, and what Jesus has done to rescue them.
The Problem of Sin
Every person on earth has a problem. We are separated from the life of God because we have broken His laws. The result of this is the certainty of judgment.
But your sinful acts have alienated you from your God; your sins have caused him to reject you and not listen to your prayers. (Isaiah 59:2 NET)
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23 NET)
The Reality of Judgment
We break God’s laws and come far short of His perfect standards. God not only sees our actions (what we do) but he knows our thoughts and imaginations (what we think).
The person who sins is the one who will die. (Ezekiel 18:20 NET)
For the payoff of sin is death (Romans 6:23 NET)
“For unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24 NET)
The Hopelessness of Good Deeds
Because we are sinful and separated from God, there are no good deeds that we can do to earn salvation from God. Everything we do is contaminated by sin.
“All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…” (Isaiah 64:6 NIV)
“There is no one righteous, not even one.” (Romans 3:10 NET)
Salvation Is The Gift of God
There is nothing we can do to save ourselves, but God offers us salvation as a free gift. Jesus took the death penalty for us and died in our place.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 NET)
“For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NET)
But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NET)
“He saved us not by works of righteousness that we have done but on the basis of his mercy.” (Titus 3:5 NET)
You Must Take Action To Receive The Gift Of Salvation
Putting your faith in Jesus means trust in what He has done for you and not trusting in your own good deeds to earn credit with God.
God offers the gift of salvation to everyone. But it is not enough to know that this gift has been offered to you. You must take a step of faith and receive this gift from God.
“Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and thus has righteousness and with the mouth one confesses and thus has salvation. For the scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” (Romans 10:9-11 NET)
“For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NET)
A Simple Prayer
Prayer is simply a conversation with God who is waiting to hear from you. Prayer does not have to be long or complicated. Your prayer must be sincere, from the heart, and you must tell God that you know you need forgiveness of your sins and that you are trusting in what His Son, Jesus, did for you.
God I know that I am guilty of sins that will bring everlasting punishment. I believe that there is nothing that I can do to earn salvation. I believe that your Son, Jesus, died in my place to pay for my sins. I believe that he rose from the dead as proof that He was your Son. I now receive your gift of forgiveness and eternal life in Jesus. Thank you God for saving me.
The Security of Salvation
Anyone who puts their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior has God’s promise of eternal life.
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; no one will snatch them from my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can snatch them from my Father’s hand.” (John 10:28-29 NET)
“I tell you the solemn truth, the one who hears my message and believes the one who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned, but has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24 NET)
