I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. Romans 14:14
Can a Christian smoke marijuana if it is legal in their state?
Can a Christian get a tattoo?
Should a believer ever drink alcohol?
Can I buy stock in a company that makes war materials?
How does God feel about R rated movies?
What kind of music should I listen to?
The Bible does not contain answers for every particular activity or situation that you must make decisions about. However, the Bible does give specific instructions by which you can make decisions in life situations.
1. Do You Have Doubts About This Activity?
If you have doubts about this activity then do not do it.
Romans 14:23 “If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.”
2. Can You Do This In The Name Of Christ?
Would Jesus do this? Could you involve Jesus in this activity or take Him to this place?
Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
3. Would Your Example Harm Another Christian?
If another believer saw you involved in this thing, would it encourage then to do something that they have doubts about or would it harm their conscience? Then do not do it.
1 Corinthians 8:9-13 “Do not cause a brother or sister with a weaker conscience to stumble…And you are sinning against Christ when you sin against other Christians by encouraging them to do something they believe is wrong.”
4. Does Your Involvement In This Activity Show Others What God Is Like?
Ask yourself if doing this will show the world the true nature of God. If doing this thing reflects badly on God, on Scripture, or your testimony, do not do it.
1 Corinthians 10:31-32 “Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, you must do all for the glory of God. Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentiles or the church of God.”
5. Does This Thing Slow You Down In Your Walk With God?
Our goal is to become closer to God and to have no barriers to prayer or fellowship with God. Will doing this thing inhibit your fellowship with God?
Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress.”
6. Would This Activity Harm Your Body?
Your body is the home of God on earth. You should do nothing to your body that brings harm, weakness, or dishonor to the “temple of God” (your body).
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Or don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”
7. Could This Thing Become Your Master?
If you allow yourself to do this action could it become habit forming and become your master rather than your servant?
1 Corinthians 6:12 “You may say, “I am allowed to do anything.” But I reply, “Not everything is good for you.” And even though “I am allowed to do any-thing,” I must not become a slave to anything.”
8. Would This Thing Bring You Closer To God Or To The World?
If this activity brings you into alignment with the thinking of the world, it is not for you. There are many activities which seem neutral but they actually conform us to the world’s way of thinking and the goals of the world.
1 John 2:15-16 “Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you, for when you love the world, you show that you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only the lust for physical pleasure, the lust for everything we see, and pride in our possessions. These are not from the Father. They are from this evil world.”
9. Would This Thing Harm Your Testimony To The Unsaved?
If you do this thing what would the unsaved think of it knowing that you are a Christian.
Colossians 4:5 “Live wisely among those who are not Christians.”
1 Corinthians 10:33 “I don’t just do what I like or what is best for me, but what is best for them so they may be saved.”
10. Would This Activity Involve A “Partnership” With An Unsaved Person?
We do live in this world and we have to get jobs, go to school, and live in neighborhoods with people who do not know God. We are to be lights in the darkness and to do that we should get to know the unsaved and model Christian living for them. But Christians are forbidden from doing anything that would join us to an unbeliever in a moral or legal way.
2 Corinthians 6:14-17 “Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can goodness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the Devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? Therefore, come out from them and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord.”
Be Different From The World
There are many decisions you make every day. What is allowable for me? What is good for me? What will please God? The person who is dedicated to God will weigh every decision because they realize that the smallest decision can bring them one step closer to God or one step farther from God. Choose only those things which bring you closer to God and you will discover that the sacrificial life is ultimately good for you.
Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing, and perfect will.
